Pet adoption is the taking of responsibility for an abandoned or otherwise homeless animal. Pet adoptions can take place at an animal shelter, animal rescue, SPCA, or other organizations developed for this purpose. The Humane Society of the U.S. estimates that 3-4 million dogs and cats are euthanized each year because of a lack of homes.
